"Three Soldiers"
Robert Tracy
Copy after Frederick Hart
Pencil
8 x 9"
2001

I drew this from a photo of my favorite sculpture, "Three Soldiers" by Frederick Hart. This sculpture is in D.C. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, "The Wall".

I had this posted before as a colorized version in Photoshop. This is the actual drawing.

My technique is layer upon layer of cross-hatching with a Pentel 0.3mm pencil.

Late news on the sculpture: [link]

First of all I must say the cross hatching is unreal. How much time did you put into this one??? I can only imagine knowing your perfectionism. This picture speaks so much about the Marines..comrads in arms, how they never leave a fallen comrad," once a Marine, always a Marine". There is nothing like them. I love this perspective. It makes something that cannot leave your mind. I feel this piece stands out from all your others because it is done for Marines, by a Marine. I love your thinking tool!!

Time? I'd guess 150 hrs. actual work.

Make you a deal. I bring this original over for you to see, or any other you'd like to see--you can't see it any better than the original. You find and hand over to me for one day the little beer cans and/or the mouse drawing I did for you so I can scan or photograph them. Then I'll post those drawings here with credit to you as the owner. They'll be some of my earliest surviving art works.

I STILL THINK I AM GOING TO FIND THEM...THEY WILL BE A TREASURE FOR SURE. I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE MOUSE, BUT IT IS THAT TINY BEER CAN I THINK I AM GOINGF TO FIND. I NEED NO RECOGNITION THAT IS FOR SURE!

Wow. This is the best of it's kind here on dA.
Nothing else like it, I'd say. Brilliant.
As a man that went through this stuff, it's even more passionate and meaningful than if it were done by someone that doesn't. You have my respect, both for this awesome stuff, and for what you did. I'm no soldier. But I respect them, and you. Again, this picture is one of the most awesome soldier-related works here on dA. Thanks for submitting it so that I could someday see it. It's quite inspiring. So much detail...I'll be staring @ this for a long time.
