A Grave Matter, Pastels
Pastels
24 x 18"
1975

This is a companion work of "A Grave Matter" [link]

I don't recall which came first, the pencil drawing or this pastel study. And as you can see, this is a study--not a finished work.

I love your work so much. The unfinished look is great.

Cool, i bet this would look great if it were finished, but either way the skull is really good.

Thank you.

Yeh, unfinished. So many unfinished works, but these are things that lead to the finished work.

Margaret,

Thank you. A very rough study. The only time--I don't know why--I used a pumice stone over the paper before making the study.

...perhaps it was to give the paper a greater capacity for holding pigment?

I was just trying things, anything. I wouldn't do it again--I like my pastel paper as smooth as I can find.
