I never saw him stern. A gentle man. Here, he was momentarily distracted. Yes, although my mother hated him, she always liked his looks. And would tell me that I was a better looking version of my father. Quite a compliment.
Well, I wish I had a larger nose like my father had. My mother was a sweet person. She was in the hospital last year with double-pneumonia and was coming out of it quite well. Expected to see her back at her house in a few days. My wife went to see her and was told that she'd just died of internal bleeding. Quite a shock. She was quite amazing. Went to work as a nurse's aid in the early 1950's when she had 3 of us children to look after. She worked for $.50 an hour. Later worked her whole life as an account supervisor for Purdue university.
