8½ x 5½"
1970's

This is an example of pages upon pages of serious study of anatomy. The sternocleidomastoid muscle is, to me, a most beautiful muscle that has origins and insertions in three bones from the "collar bone" and the top of the "rib cage" to the lowest part of the skull. It's most attractive in the female. See a not so good example of it at my "Girl with Lamps" [link]

Great idea filling a sketchbook with anatomical studies. Do you refer to your notes when you draw or does the mere fact of writing down help you remember the anatomy?

Oh, not just one sketchbook. I drew all the bones from every angle. And the muscles.

I don't have to refer to my notes anymore. It was a matter of learning the Latin names, thereby giving me concepts for what I see. Knowing anatomy gives one x-ray vision. He sees in his subject right through the clothing etc. to draw the subject with confidence.

Over the years, I've forgotten a lot of the terms, but just having gone through the effort I gained an invaluable tool.

Dear Hasan,

Thank you. There are hundreds of these little studies I made myself learn.

By the way, I never smile. I forgot how to smile a long time ago. However, I take your sentiment to heart and maybe some day I get it back.

Oh! And this is still superficial (upper) anatomy. Not deep. The artist doesn't need to be a physician.
